We all rely on our IT or network security gurus, yet rarely do we give them the proper praise. Well, it just so happens every year the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) hosts its global Web Application Security People of the Year Awards (WASPYs) to shine the spotlight on those going above and beyond the call of duty. The WASPYs are a way for the security community to recognize outstanding leadership and collaboration on a global scale. Here is a breakdown of the 2014 WASPY winners:
Best Chapter Leader: Japan chapter leaders
To say competition is fierce in this category is an understatement, considering the WASPYs are a globally recognized award. Regardless, this award acknowledges active chapter leaders on not only their leadership but also their contributions to the growth and organization of the chapter. The Best Chapter Leader award goes to Japan and specifically, Riotaro Okada and Sen Ueno for their dedication, outstanding leadership and collaboration. In the first two years, they grew their chapter to over 2,000 participants, and, successfully organized the first AppSec APAC event, which was highly praised.
Best Project Leader: Simon Bennetts
This award identifies the best active project lead who demonstrated strong leadership and open collaboration during the development and execution of their project. You will find the award deservedly goes to Simon Bennetts as his nominators found him to possess a “humble heart and strong leadership.” And, his winning project was the OWASP Zed Attack Proxy Project, which is a penetration testing tool designed to discover vulnerabilities in web applications. Bennetts works for Mozilla on their security team but has been developing web applications since 1997.
Best Mission Outreach: AppSec USA 2013 Team
Mission outreach is the crux of any company or organization, and this award acknowledges the individual who contributed to the growth of the organization through outreach and collaboration in the community. AppSec USA is a software security conference for security technologists, auditors, risk managers, and entrepreneurs to share the latest research and best practices in the security industry.
Best New Community Supporter: AppSec APAC
It was definitely a night for AppSec, as it essentially took home three awards: Best Chapter Leader, Mission Outreach and New Community Supporter. The later was thanks in large part to Japan chapter leaders: Riotaro Okada and Sen Ueno for implementing AppSec APAC in Tokyo. It was the first AppSec conference to be held in APAC, and thanks to strong leadership and collaboration between chapters, was a huge success.
There you have it! These individuals have shown not only their dedication to the security industry but also to providing strong leadership and offering effective collaboration amongst fellow OWASP members and chapters. Please join us in congratulating the 2014 WASPY award-winners.
